The Regions

Rheingau

The famous vineyards and towns of the Rheingau region stretch from Lorchhausen to Wiesbaden along the right bank of the river Rhine – the bank with the most south-facing slopes. The southern exposure is important to this very bit of available warmth and sunshine. The hilly topography, in combination with the many small and large river valleys, provides a diversity of microclimates within a relatively small winegrowing area. Therefore, the wines from this region range from racy to earthy, elegant to powerful, fruity to floral and everything in between.

The Kaiserstuhl

The Kaiserstuhl is a mountain of volcanic origin which lies like a unique climatic island in the upper Rhine river valley. The warmest vineyards in Germany with the highest recorded “sunshine hours” are found here, with soils ranging from flint to loess. Sekthaus Solter owns vineyards near the wine town Bischoffingen in the western Kaiserstuhl area. Here, they grow grapes of the Pinot family: Spätburgunder, Grauburgunder and Weißburgunder, or Pinots noir, gris and blanc as they are called outside of Germany.
