The Grapes
Spätburgunder, or Pinot noir
Pinot noir is a grape which originates from the Burgundy region of France and is well known for its exquisite and velvety texture. The main use of the Spätburgunder grape in the Sekthaus Solter is for the Pinot-Cuvée – where it gives the wine a pleasant yet strong backbone. For our Roséwine, we also use Spätburgunder grapes, but during the fermentation process only very brief contact between the new wine and the grape skins is allowed. This short contact gives our Roséwine its lovely nose and brilliant, fine colour.
Riesling
The Riesling grape, upon which the great world-wide reputation of German wines is founded, is our most highly valued variety. The focus of making Riesling wine lies in the classic wineregions of the north. To make the absolute highest class Riesling wines, the vineyards themselves must be very high potential, with good soils and good exposure. The best Riesling wines are grown in lightly eroded bedrock such as shale or quartz, and directly capture the fine aromas and tastes of the grape. Riesling has earned high praise indeed through the ages:
The juice of this, the most noble of grapes, concentrates in itself all that nature has to offer of spice, aromas, taste and charm. The poets value this nectar above all spirits as the true drink of the Gods” Benedict Kölges, 1837
